Boston North Artists (BNA) is a group of amateur and professional painters who meet once a week to work outdoors (en plein air) at a variety of North Shore locations.
The 12-15 regular members live all over the North Shore, from Charlestown to Rockport. Over the past year, they have painted in Concord, Danvers, Essex, Gloucester, Ipswich, Marblehead, Newburyport, Peabody, Rockport, Salem, Saugus, Stoneham and Wakefield. Sometimes the group chooses a particular motif, and other times they spread out and meet only at the end of the session, usually over lunch, to discuss what they have painted. During the winter and inclement weather, they meet and paint at the Senior Center in Saugus.
The core of Boston North Artists comes from a previous painting group, founded and run by the talented watercolorist, Tom Sutherland, who passed away in late 2013. After his passing the group continued meeting, inviting friends and friends of friends to join. Eventually the group began to call itself “Boston North Artists” to recognize the group’s growth beyond its original membership.
The group is well represented in north-of-Boston art associations and participates in association shows and juried exhibits. Members have achieved 1st Place and/or Best in Show awards at shows sponsored by the associations to which they belong, including the Newburyport Art Association, Rockport Art Association, North Shore Art Association, Marblehead Art Association, Concord Art Association, Newton Watercolor Society, New England Watercolor Society and the American Watercolor Society.
