After many years of painting in oils, I decided to try my hand at watercolors. I’d like to say that it was love at first brush stroke, but it actually took several attempts before I became comfortable with the medium. And, as most artists will attest, one rarely conquers watercolors.
I have been fortunate to have studied with some of the best artist/teachers on the North Shore including Phil Perkins and Roger Curtis (oils), Louise Anderson, Bernie Gerstner, and prior to his passing, Tom Sutherland, for watercolors. It was with Tom that I learned to paint with passion, to hang in there when I thought all was lost and to “see” beyond the obvious.
My preference is to paint plein air, but our climate dictates the necessity of working inside. In my studio and workshop group, I paint mostly from photos taken on location throughout the summer months or from my travels. My watercolors have won several awards and many of my paintings can be found in private collections.
